Midem 2005 was the first chance to get to hear, see and feel Skin – it was limited to the world of the music business and Skin’s first life performance since 2003.
On another note, the new website is in the early stages of testing and should be up very soon!
We've posted some pics of Skin at her applauded performance at Midem
Former Skunk Anansie frontwoman Skin proved the highlight of what was a diverse and successful showcase of UK talent at Midem last night. The Martinez hotel played host to British at Midem, a two-part event containing an early accoustic showcase followed by a rock and jazz evening. By the second half of the evening, the venue was packed solid, with audience members from France, the UK and the US. The first act of the evening's programme was The Infadels who proved why they won the Diesel U-Music best live act award last year. Five bouncing bundles of energy, the band conveyed Gang Of Four-style basslines, Rapture-esque grooves and pulsing synths. Delivering lounge version renditions of classics by the likes of Cole Porter and Tom Waits, it is easy to see why Gwyneth Herbert has drawn comparisons to Jamie Cullum. But her voice is far more interesting than this, bringing to mind a smokier, softer Beth Gibbons. Then, as if to prove a point Herbert covered Portishead's Glory Box. Self-pennned tracks like Bitter Sweet and Blue were well received, but it was the current single, a cover of Neil Young's Only Love Can Break Your Heart, that closed the set and set the Martinez alight. Taking to the stage after Herbert was leather-clad insect-framed Skin, who moved with such manic energy that everyone remembered why she caused such a stir in the first place. The new material with her new band - being given a worldwide live debut at Midem - really impressed. The new band sounds scuzzier and rawer than Skunk Anansie and as a result Skin sounds somehow more natural and possibly more euphoric too. The highlight, though, was a cover of Electronic's Getting Away With It, which saw a room of weary Midem delegates transformed into a dancing throng. It was a difficult act to follow for closing band The Grand National, but they more than held their own. Grand National are a six-piece who, like The Infadels, play rock music with dance elements and a lot of fun thrown in, such as one song which for no obvious reason morphed into Kelis's Milkshake. All in all, it was a night that highlighted the musical invention, the vocal delivery and the sheer ability to rock a stage that is present in UK music at the moment.
Skin is headlining The British at Midem, the world’s music market. She will be playing at 10.30 PM on Monday January 24th, Hotel Martinez Ballroom.
